psychotherapist, therapist, counsellor, or coach...?
What's with all the buzz? To put it simple:
Psychotherapist is a governmentally protected degree in the Netherlands. One can exercise this profession only after gaining a university degree and a so-called, BIG registration.
Therapists get a (postgraduate) degree, either at a university or at any other accredited institution.
Status of a counsellor or a coach can be acquired at any certified school.
Coach is working primarily with topics of personal development: expanding talents, increasing potential, self-value, and motivation. Sometimes working with motivation alone is not enough, no matter how hard someone wants to change, something within blocks the change. In this case, counselling takes a step further, by including work with inner bottlenecks to get insights in what hinders a person from within. Therapist goes even deeper and provides assistance with (dissociated) traumatic experiences to release deep pain, fear and/or stagnation.
A simplified reference to "therapy" is used throughout this website.
